Animal Activism

The last books I read, or skimmed, were Obama's biography (read it at home on election night), and a book about animal activism, which has a lot of information about the conditions of animals in captivity for consummerism.

Really sad, those animal conditions. After reading, I went with the spaghetti with tomato sauce, no meat.

However, I do like meat and think it can be consumed in good conscience, if we know how the animal is treated at butchering and before, how they are kept.

I think, if anything, I am going to try to buy only cage-free, range-fed eggs, to protest caging and captivity of chickens, and I'll look into a way to buy meat that comes from cows and animals treated well. I can't resist an occasional hot dog though. They are pretty good from the corner carts in D.C.!

I also got organic shampoo and conditioner which has the symbol for "no animal testing" (a bunny) on it.

I was already preferring organic stuff anyway, because of less pesticides and toxic things, but now I think I'll try to buy things which do not use animal cruelty or captivity, whenever possible.

I was also thinking, before I read the animal activism book, that I might like to write a collection of short stories or anecdotes about animals and living forms I've known. I don't know why. It was an idea that came to mind, and isn't what I've thought I'd write a first book about, but I might look into it.

The book I'm trying to read now is by Stephen Hawking: A Brief History of Time. I tried to get into it at work though, when it was slow, which I couldn't do, because my coworkers treated me to all jukebox "80s music" night and I couldn't concentrate while listening to The Cure.

I also have a book I'm still trying to read, called "American Theocracy".
