In my moving and new job processing, I've fallen behind on politics. And all of my readings in general. I've sort of needed a small break, because with all the change, I've kept up and had to work hard to get things done, but then I sometimes feel I need a breather. I miss keeping up though, and just glanced at the Economist today and realized I've missed the departure speech by Hillary Clinton. I haven't watched a DVD all the way through either, which my roommate has, including Christopher Hitchens, called "The Four Horsemen". There is really a LOT of very good reading, watching, and listening material around here. If I were not having to think about so many different things right now, I'd be digging in more. I was a day or two behind on reading Hitchens' latest article, which is slow for me.
I'll have to get back to it, and I know I've been very, very, bad about continuing with the true story stuff, which I always mention lately, but never go back to, and must do.
I'll have to brush up and make my commentary later today or tonight I suppose. I'm glad Hillary finished out her part in the race. I think it's admirable. Whether I agree with her and her team or not, the point is that this is all supposed to be a democratic process and if people are pushed out, that's antithesis. I wish it were this way for the rest of the candidates as well though. Why should money or popularity pressure them out so early in the race? I understand the party dynamics, but it seems having more people to debate would strengthen our nation and candidates in general.
I think I already wrote about this, but Hitchens mentions, in a recent article for Slate magazine, the merits of the British Parliamentary system, which I think is an excellent idea...they debate things and put the president on the spot, to be questioned at different times.
Of course, I don't believe I'm the most interesting writer on these matters, but a lot of this is a record of my interests for my son, so he fully knows who his mother is and was and how her views change or do not change with time.
