This morning I listened to Kozmic Blues by Janis Joplin and then looked for something with her live. I found the best video of a live performance she did in Toronto, of "Cry Baby." I love the part where she sings "The grass always looks greener when you're looking in someone else's eyes"... Her expression and the delivery is so fluid. This is such a great performance, a classic, it makes me wish I'd been there, in 1970, before I was born.
I like her improv speaking throughout the song too, esp. the part where she says, "You're looking for your life over there honey, you know where your life is? Your life's waiting like a god-damn fool, right here, for you man..."
She's so relaxed and uninhibited. The link is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjD4eWEUgMM.
She's sometimes almost not reaching the notes, sort of like her voice is worn out, on the higher hits, but still, her delivery is amazing. I just read she died in October of 1970 and this performance is from 1970 so I wonder what the actual date was. I notice how she scratches her head a lot and I don't know if that's just a relaxation tic or if it has something to do with drugs she was on or something. That she could do what she did, despite her addictions, is phenomenal. She certaintly sounds lucid when she's talking during this performance...
