Comment From Woman About HPRP (Inaccurate)

I had someone send me a comment with a publication she got somewhere from online without stating the source.

I read it, and it's not correct.

It sounds professional, but it is not accurate. What she sent states hotel vouchers are not used and this directly contradicts information available online at the federal site for HUD on HPRP.

It totally contradicts the provisions which were signed into law.

So wherever this woman got that slick sounding memo, it is wrong and contradicts the federal provisions.

It looks like hotels are only available if you have an apartment lined up that isn't immediately available, and then only when no appropriate shelter beds are available.

Nope. That's not the case. The program allows for any alternative means and it includes hotels with zero stipulation that an apartment is already signed up for or lined up for. The point is that if an apartment search is still ongoing, and the "lining" up of one is still taking time, hotels may be used in lieu of apartment.

Shelters are not part of the program. The HPRP program provides money to prevent homelessness, not to put people in homeless shelters and especially not where it would be in the best interest of a particular party.

It's not a last resort. It is an alternative which is preferable to, when searching for an apartment, any other option. The program is to get people OUT of shelters and to pay money for costs for keeping people out of them.
